A presentation of an annotated timeline detailing the development of the Stony Brook University Open Access Policy. Before its adoption in February 2017, the SBU Open Access Policy traveled a twisting path and withstood a number of challenges. This presentation describes the process of developing the policy, finding models and a support community, working with the myriad stakeholders and collaborators, overcoming challenges, engaging the campus community, post policy promotion, education and raising awareness of open access.

Darren Chase is the Head of Scholarly Communication at Stony Brook University Libraries. His research interests include open access, scholarly publishing, user experience, and information literacy instruction.
Shafeek Fazal is the Associate Dean for Library Technology, Discovery, and Digital Initiatives at Stony Brook University Libraries. He is key member of the administration team and leads all technology projects and initiatives across the University Libraries. His research interests include open access, open education, repository platforms, self-study and information literacy learning outcomes assessment, and floating libraries. Shafeek is a recipient of the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Librarianship.
